Wondering what SOCAN stands for? Well…. read this:
SOCAN, the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada, is the Canadian copyright collective for the communication and performance of musical works.
K-OS, Sarah Harmer, Nelly Furtado, Diana Krall, Sarah McLachlan, jacksoul, Nickelback and Finger Eleven were among SOCAN Award winners last night during a ceremony at The Carlu in Toronto hosted by R&B singer Jully Black.
K-OS’ Crabbuckit and jacksoul’s Shady Day won urban music awards, while Harmer’s Almost picked up the folk/roots music award.
Furtado’s Powerless (Say What You Want) and Try, and McLachlan’s Fallen and Stupid were among the pop music award winners.
Diana Krall picked up the Hagood Hardy Jazz Music Award while Finger Eleven’s One Thing won the rock music award.
Nickelback won the international achievement trophy and Valdy took home the national achievement award.
Canadian uber-managers Bruce Allen and Same Feldman were given the special achievement award for their contributions to Canada’s music industry.

Juanes with Nelly have won their division of the “Premios Juventud” (”Youth Awards”)!
The first awards show on Spanish language television in which young Hispanics honour their favourite Latin stars, “Premios Juventud 2004″ gave awards in 22 innovative categories. Among the night’s biggest winners were Mexican superstar Thalia, with three statuettes (”Party Starter,” “Dream Chic,” and “My Idol Is”), and Puerto Rican heartthrob Chayanne, who also won three awards (”He’s Got Style,” “He’s So Hot,” and “Best Moves”). Other takers included Jennifer Lopez (”"She’s Totally Red Carpet” and “Paparazzi’s favourite Target”), popular Banda group Liberacion (”Catchiest Tune” and “Best Re-Mix”), famous baseball shortstop Alex Rodriguez (”Hottest Male Athlete”), and Colombian pop idol Juanes (”Dynamic Duet” for his recent duo with Nelly Furtado). Pop music sensation Paulina Rubio took home one of the night’s most important awards, “All Over the Dial,” which recognises the hottest recording artist of the moment.

Nelly has been nominated for three Western Canadian Music Awards -Nelly Furtado triple nominee in Western Canadian Music Awards
CALGARY - Nelly Furtado drew nominations in three categories, including Entertainer of the Year, in the list of nominees for the 2004 Western Canadian Music Awards announced Tuesday in Calgary.
In addition to top entertainer, Furtado’s Folklore is nominated for both Outstanding Pop Recording and Outstanding Album (Major Label).
The other candidates for Entertainer of the Year are Michael Bublé, Doc Walker, Sarah McLachlan and Nickelback.
The awards ceremony is part of a three-day music conference and festival that will also include an awards show honouring behind-the-scenes industry workers and workshops for youth interested in pursuing musical careers.
This year marks the second edition of the annual awards ceremony, which recognises outstanding achievement by musicians from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Yukon.
The event was established in late 2002 when the Prairie Music Alliance joined with the Music Industry Associations of B.C. and the Yukon to form the Western Canada Music Alliance.
The Western Canadian Music Awards will be distributed at the Jack Singer Concert Hall on 3rd Oct.

The biggest names in Latin show business, fashion, and sports will be honoured on the first annual “Premios Juventud” (Youth Awards). The electrifying 2-hour entertainment special will be broadcast from Miami, the party capital of the world. It will air live on the Univision Network (NYSE:UVN) on Thursday, 23rd September from 9-11 p.m. ET/PT (8-10 p.m. Central/Mountain).
Recognising popularity and overall appreciation in five distinct areas - Film, Music, Sports, Fashion and Pop Culture - the “Premios Juventud” nominees were selected based on a nationwide poll conducted among a representative sample of Spanish-language television’s younger viewing audience. From 2nd-22nd August, Hispanic America will then cast their votes online and determine the final outcome.
Far from your typical award show, “Premios Juventud” will give awards in 22 unconventional categories in tune with today’s Hispanic youth. It’s one young party no one will want to miss. Marc Anthony and Thalia lead with 13 nominations each; Anthony competes in categories such as “CD to Die For” and “He’s Got Style” and Thalia in “She’s Totally Red Carpet” and “My Idol Is,” among others. The popular Puerto Rican actor/singer Chayanne follows with 8 mentions in categories such as “He’s so Hot!” and “Best Moves,” while the ever popular Mexican singer/songwriter Juan Gabriel makes the list with 7 nominations, vying for awards in categories such as “All Over the Dial” and “Catchiest Tune” for his international hit “Siempre en mi mente” (Always on My Mind).
“Harry Potter,” “Shrek 2,” “Amores perros” and “El crimen del Padre Amaro” were nominated for “All-time Best Flick,” while Alex Rodriguez, Sammy Sosa and Oscar de la Hoya rival for “Hottest Male Athlete.” Nominees for Hispanic youth’s most “Dynamic Duet” include Christina Aguilera with Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony with Jennifer Lopez and father Vicente Fernandez with son Alejandro Fernandez.
